Laurel Soderstrom, Master Dance Educator (MDE), has been teaching dance for 30 years. This is her 20th year as owner, director, and choreographer of The Laurel School of Dance. Laurel has studied dance for over 40 years at local studios, including the former National Academy of the Arts in Champaign, IL, Chicagoland area, and the Broadway Dance Center in New York City.
Laurel is the areas only active dance instructor who continues to lead by example. While other dance instructors take a side-line approach to teaching, Laurel believes that a visual example is often the fastest and most effective way to learn dance. This philosophy is what continues to drive Laurel to perform.
Laurel is a master graduate and member of the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters. She has degrees in Professional Development in Applied Dance Education from both Northwestern University and Illinois State University.
Laurel is the only area dance instructor in both Champaign and Vermilion County who actively attends CNADM workshops every year. This assures her students that they are learning the latest styles and most up to date steps, routines and movements.
In addition, Laurel is accredited to teach ALL four disciplines of dance: BALLET, JAZZ, TAP, and ACROBATICS along with the subcategories of Hip/Hop, Lyrical, and Pointe.
Laurel has won many first place awards in regional and national dance competitions with her own original choreographed dances. She has choreographed over 35 shows for local theatre organizations, including Danville Light Opera, Local Beauty Pageants, the productions of Cats, and the recent production The Wizard of Oz for The Lincoln Park Theatre Company.
Laurel is dedicated to the art of dance and continues her education to stay current in her field. She regularly attends workshops, seminars, and master classes instructed by todays prominent dance authorities to bring her students the latest dance techniques and cutting edge routines.
